The Town of Florence is warning residents about a text message scam involving someone impersonating the mayor. Scammers are sending messages from unknown numbers, including those with an 833 area code. These texts falsely claim to be from “Mayor Eaton” and ask recipients about community priorities. The Town has confirmed these messages are not legitimate.
The fraudulent messages may appear friendly and harmless. However, officials say this type of outreach can be used to gather personal information or build trust for future scams.
Town officials provided several tips to help residents spot scams:
- The Town does not conduct surveys or outreach through random text messages
- Official communications never come from unidentified numbers
- Town staff will never request personal, financial, or sensitive information via text
- If a message is unexpected, verify before responding
Residents who receive these texts should not reply or click any links. They may report suspicious messages to the Florence Police Department non-emergency line at 520-868-7681, option 2.
